Vocabulary words 1

TermDefinition
Alimentary canal One way tube that begins in the mouth and ends with the anus.
Anus The opening at the end of the alimentary canal through which solid waste matter leaves the body.
Chemical digestion Large organic molecules are broken down into small simple molecules.
Esophagus Is a tube that moves food from the mouth to the stomach by peristalsis.
Gall bladder is a small hollow (hueco) organ where bile is stored and concentrated before it is released into the small intestine.
Hydrochloric acid Destroys bacteria normally present in food and provides the proper pH for enzyme action. It is a component of the gastric juice in the stomach.
Large intestine Receives undigested foods (wastes) from the small intestine.
Lipase Enzyme that begins the chemical digestion of lipids
Liver is a large organ that detoxifies chemicals and metabolizes drugs. It also secretes bile that ends up back in the intestines.
Mechanical digestion When food is physically cut.
Oral cavity Mouth
Pancreas Secretes insulin
Peristalsis Muscular contractions
Rectum Lower end of the large intestine.
Small intestine Is where food digestion is completed and digested nutrients are absorbed into the blood stream.
Stomach Is a muscular J- shaped organ. It contains gastric juice , hydrochloric acid , and digestive enzymes.
