| environmental factors | Those factors caused by a persons surroundings. |
| premature | Term that describes babies who are born too soon. |
| low birth weight | Term that describes babies that weigh less then 5 1/2 pounds at birth |
| Rh factor | A protein substance found in the red bloods cells of about 85 percent of the population |
| Diabetes | a disorder caused by the body's inability to use sugar ppproperly |
| pregnancy induced hypertension | the name for high blood pressure caused by pregnancy |
| sexually transmitted disease | infectious illness that are passed primarily through sexual intercourse |
| acquired immundeficiency syndrome | a disease caused by the HIV virus, which attacks the body's immune system |
| fetal alcohol syndrome | a condition in infants that occurs when the mother drinks heavily during pregnancy |
| congenital problem | a physical biochemical problem that is present at birth and may be caused by genetic factors or environmental factors |
| miscarriage | the expulsion of a baby from the mothers body before week 20 |
| still birth | loss of a fetus after week 20 of pregnancy |
| ultrasound | a prenatal test in which sound waves bounce off the fetus to produce an image of the fetus inside the womb |
| chronic village sampling | a prenatal procedure in which for finding abnormalities in the unborn by testing a small sample of the chorion |
| amniocentesis | a prenatal test in ewhich a needle is inserted through the womens abdomen into the amniotic sac and a sample of tje fluid is removed for cell study |
| Labor | the process that moves the baby out of the mothers body |
| certified nurse midwives | nurses who have special training in delivering babies during normal pregnancies |
| natural childbirth | a delivery method in which the pregnant woman is learns about the birth process and uses breathing and relaxation techniques to reude fear and pain |
| Lamaze method | a delivery method in which the pregnant woman trained to use breathing patterns to keep her mind off of pain |
| Leboyer method | a delivery method that focuses on making the baby as comfortable as possible during and immediately after delivery |
| lightening | A change in the babys position in whch the uterus settles downward and forward and the baby descends lower into the pelvis |
| breech birth position | the buttocks first position in which some babies enter the birth canal |
| dilation | the first stage of labor during which the cervix opens |
| episiotomy | an incision made to widen the birth canal and prevent tearing |
| forceps | a c urved instrument that fits around the sides of the babys head and is used to help the doctor ease the baby down the birth canal during a contraction |
| vacuum extraction | technique that uses suction to help the doctor move the baby down the birth canal as a mother. |
| cesarean section | a delivery in which thw mothers abdomen and uterus are surgically opened and the baby is removed |
| bonding | developing a feeling of affection |
| postpartum care | The care a mother receives during the six to eight weeks following the birth of her baby. |
| baby blue | A mild postpartum mood disorder that goes away on its own |
| postpartum depression | A less frequent, but serious for, of depression that may occur after giving birth. |
| postpartum psychosis | A rare and extremely severe mental; illness that may result after giving birth. |
