Genetics

TermDefinition
genetics the study of heredity
heredity the passage of genetic instructions from one generation to the next
DNA A material that contains the genetic information that makes up the chromosomes.
genes pieces of DNA found within chromosomes that pass genetic traits from parent to offspring
trait A characteristic that an organism can pass on to its offspring through its genes.
alleles The possible variations/forms of a gene that control a specific trait
genotype An organism's genetic makeup, or allele combinations. Example: BB, Bb, bb
phenotype An organism's physical appearance of a trait, or what it looks like Example: eye color
heterozygous An organism that has two different alleles for a trait Example: Bb
homozygous An organism that has two identical (the same) alleles for a trait Example: BB, bb
