Term | Definition |
---|---|
Biochemistry | the branch of science concerned with the chemical and physicochemical processes that occur within living organisms. |
Element | is a part or aspect of something abstract, especially one that is essential or characteristic. |
Compound | is a chemical substance composed of many identical molecules composed of atoms from more than one element held together by chemical bonds. |
Organic compounds | is generally any chemical compound that contains carbon. |
Inorganic compounds | is typically a chemical compound that lacks C-H bonds, that is, a compound that is not an organic compound, but the distinction is not defined or even of particular interest. |
Carbohydrates | any of a large group of organic compounds occurring in foods and living tissues and including sugars, starch, and cellulose. |
Lipids | is a biomolecule that is soluble in nonpolar solvents. |
Proteins | Proteins are large biomolecules, or macromolecules, consisting of one or more long chains of amino acid residues. |
Enzymes | a substance produced by a living organism that acts as a catalyst to bring about a specific biochemical reaction. |
Nucleic acids | a complex organic substance present in living cells, especially DNA or RNA, whose molecules consist of many nucleotides linked in a long chain. |
Hydrolysis | is a term used for both an electro-chemical process and a biological one. |
Synthesis | the production of chemical compounds by reaction from simpler materials. |
pH | is a logarithmic scale used to specify the acidity or basicity of an aqueous solution. |
