Simile compares two unlike things using the words like or as
Metaphore compares two unlike things WITHOUT using the words like or as
Idiom a word or phrase that does not mean what it says; it has some other meaning
Hyperbole a complete exaggeration to make a point
Onomatopoeia the act of spelling out the way a sound sounds
Personification giving human-like qualities to non-human objects or animals
Analogy a comparison between two sets of items, typically for the purpose of explanation or clarification
Alliteration using the same sound to start two or more nearby words in a sentence
Verbal Irony saying or writing one thing and meaning something different; sarcasm
Situational Irony an outcome that is very different from what was expected
