taproot one thick root that grows larger than the other roots
fibrous roots many small, thin roots
epidermis a thin outer layer of cells
root hair a tiny hairlike structure on the outer layer of a root
cortex the second layer of a root made of soft, loose tissue
root cap the mass of cells that covers and protects the root tip
phloem a type of tissue in roots, stems, and leaves that carries food from the leaves to other plant parts
xylem a type of tissue in roots, stems, and leaves that carries water up a plant and to the leaves
herbaceous stem a smooth, soft, green stem
woody stem a hard stem that is not green
blade the broad, flat part of a leaf
petiole a stalk that connects the leaf to the plant
vein a part of a leaf that contains transport tissues
stoma a tiny opening in a leaf that allows gases into and out of the leaf
guard cells special cells that open and close the stoma
tropism the growth of a plant in a certain direction in response to a stimulus
stem part of plant which connects the roots to the leaves.
annual rings layers of growth pattern in the cross section of a woody stem
leaves green structures that grown from stems and are the site of photosynthesis
nastic response the response of a plant due to a change in cell pressure
