Simple Organisms

TermDefinition
kingdom the most general of the seven levels of classification
classification a system of grouping things according to similarities
bacteria simple, unicellular organism that do not have nuclei (singular = bacterium)
flagella long, thin, threadlike structures that are used for movement (singular = flagellum)
archaebacteria bacteria that live in extreme environments
protist a simple organism that is neither plant nor animal but that often has characteristics of both
protozoan an animal-like protist
cilia tiny hairs used for movement (singular = cilium)
pseudopod an extension of cytoplasm used for movement
algae plantlike protists
fungi organisms that may be unicellular or multicellular, have cells with a nucleus, and do not have chlorophyll (singular = fungus)
hyphae chains of cells that form fibers in a fungi
spore the reproductive cell of organism such as ferns, fungi, and algae
