Simple Organisms

| classification | a system of grouping things according to similarities |
| bacteria | simple, unicellular organism that do not have nuclei (singular = bacterium) |
| flagella | long, thin, threadlike structures that are used for movement (singular = flagellum) |
| archaebacteria | bacteria that live in extreme environments |
| protist | a simple organism that is neither plant nor animal but that often has characteristics of both |
| protozoan | an animal-like protist |
| cilia | tiny hairs used for movement (singular = cilium) |
| pseudopod | an extension of cytoplasm used for movement |
| algae | plantlike protists |
| fungi | organisms that may be unicellular or multicellular, have cells with a nucleus, and do not have chlorophyll (singular = fungus) |
| hyphae | chains of cells that form fibers in a fungi |
| spore | the reproductive cell of organism such as ferns, fungi, and algae |
