science words to know for the test

TermDefinition
Label a word or phrase indicating that what follows belongs in a particular category or classification
Scale system or series of marks used for measuring or registering.
Plot; a graphical technique for representing a data set,usually as a graph showing the relationship between two or more variables.
Interpret; to give or provide the meaning of a phrase or something.
Variable; any factor or trait or condition that can exist in differing amounts or types.
Independent variable ; condition or factor that is manipulated by a scientist during an experiment.
Dependent variable; experimental data collected through observation and measurement.
Problem; something you don’t understand but you can do an experiment to help you understand.
Research is the systematic investigation of scientific theories and hypotheses
Hypothesis; proposed explanation or answer to a specific question.
Experiment; process that tests a hypothesis by collecting information under controlled conditions.
Data; observations and measurements recorded during an experiment.
Conclusion; summarize how your results support or contradict your original hypothesis.
Control (group); the study that does not receive treatment by the researchers and then is used as a benchmark to measure how the other tested subjects do.
Experimental (group); is the group in a experiment that receives the variable being tested.
Constant(s); is an unchanging standard of comparison in scientific experimentation.
Controlled variables; experimental element which is constant and unchanged throughout the course of the investigation.
Placebo; an inactive substance or preparation use as a control in a experiment or test to determine the effectiveness of a medicinal drug.
