Term | Definition |
---|---|
Prokaryote | Simple cells that lack a nucleus and membrane-bound organelles. |
Eukaryote | Complex cell with membrane-bound organelles and a nucleus. |
Cytoplasm | Jelly-like substance that makes up a cell. Found in every cell. |
Ribosomes | Structure used to perform protein synthesis. Found in every cell. |
DNA | Molecule that stores genetic information. Found in every cell. |
Cell Membrane | Semi-permeable material that regulates what enters and exits the cell. Found in every cell |
Cell Wall | Rigid structure that provides support and protection to the cell. Found in plant cells and some prokaryotes. |
Chloroplast | Organelle responsible for photosynthesis. Contains chlorophyll. Found only in plant cells. |
Vacuole | Stores water, food, and waste. Found in eukaryotes. |
Mitochondria | Performs cellular respiration to produce energy. Found in eukaryotes. |
Golgi Body | Prepares items to be exported from the cell. Found in eukaryotes. |
Endoplasmic Reticulum | Assembles the cell membrane and exports proteins and other molecules. Found in eukaryotes. |
Lysosome | Performs intracellular digestion. Found in eukaryotes. |
Centriole | Important for cell division. Found in animal cells. |
Nucleus | Central unit of the cell. Controls the rest of the cell and stores DNA. Found in eukaryotes. |
