TermDefinition
vacuole stores water, nutrients, and other materials
vesicle used to transport molecules in/out of the cell. Exocytosis and endocytosis use these.
mitochondria site of ATP synthesis
nucleus contains genetic material; the brain of the cell
nucleolus produces ribosomes
lysosome contains hydrolytic enzymes used in breaking down worn out cell parts, bacteria, and other things
peroxisome breaks down hydrogen peroxide
golgi apparatus packages and transports materials in/out/other parts of the cell; "The UPS Factory"
rough ER has ribosomes embedded in it; "Highway" for transporting things (mainly proteins)
smooth ER lipid synthesis and detoxification
ribosome site of protein synthesis
cell membrane semi-permeable, made of phospholipid bilayer, controls what comes in and out of the cell
cell wall only found in plants; rigid outer wall that helps maintain cell structure
chloroplast only found in plants; organelle that convers sunlight into energy for plants
