| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| vacuole | stores water, nutrients, and other materials |
| vesicle | used to transport molecules in/out of the cell. Exocytosis and endocytosis use these. |
| mitochondria | site of ATP synthesis |
| nucleus | contains genetic material; the brain of the cell |
| nucleolus | produces ribosomes |
| lysosome | contains hydrolytic enzymes used in breaking down worn out cell parts, bacteria, and other things |
| peroxisome | breaks down hydrogen peroxide |
| golgi apparatus | packages and transports materials in/out/other parts of the cell; "The UPS Factory" |
| rough ER | has ribosomes embedded in it; "Highway" for transporting things (mainly proteins) |
| smooth ER | lipid synthesis and detoxification |
| ribosome | site of protein synthesis |
| cell membrane | semi-permeable, made of phospholipid bilayer, controls what comes in and out of the cell |
| cell wall | only found in plants; rigid outer wall that helps maintain cell structure |
| chloroplast | only found in plants; organelle that convers sunlight into energy for plants |
