annual ring each ring of xylem in a woody stem

cork the outer layer of a woody stem
cortex a food storage tissue in plants
endodermis a ring of waxy cells that surrounds the xylem in roots
fibrous root many-branched roots that grow in clusters
herbaceous stem soft, green stems
lateral bud buds along the sides of a stem that give rise to new branches, leaves, or flowers
root hair threadlike cells of the epidermis that absorb water and minerals for a plant
taproot a large, single root with smaller side roots
terminal bud the bud at the tip of a stem
woody stem a non-green stem that grows to be thick and hard
