auditory nerve a nerve that carries messages of sound to the brain
cochlea a liquid-filled, coiled chamber in the ear that contains nerve cells
cone nerve cells that can detect color
cornea the clear outer covering at the front of the eye
dermis a thick layer of cells that form in the inner part of the skin
eardrum the membrane that vibrates at the end of the ear canal
epidermis the outer layer of cells of a plant
farsighted being able to see clearly far away but not close up
iris a muscle that controls the amount of light entering the eye
lens a clear part of the eye that changes shape as you view things at different distances
lens muscle a muscle that pulls on the lens and changes its shape
nearsighted being able to see clearly close up but not far away
olfactory nerve a nerve that carries messages from the nose to the brain
optic nerve a nerve that carries messages from the retina to the brain
pupil an opening in the center of the iris through which light enters the eye
retina a structure in the back of the eye made of light-detecting nerve cells
rod nerve cells that detect motion and help us to tell if an object is light or dark
sclera the tough, white outer covering of the eye
semicircular canals inner ear parts that help us keep our balance
sense organ parts of the nervous system that tell an animal what is going on around it
taste bud nerve cells in the tongue that detect chemical molecules
vitreous humor a jelly-like material inside the eye
