Characteristics of Living Things

| stimulus | a change in the environment that causes a response -- (Plural Stimuli) |
| offspring | a new organism produced by a living thing |
| reproduction | the way organisms make more of their own kind |
| cell | the basic unit of structure and function in all living things |
| unicellular | having one cell |
| multicellular | having more than one cell |
| homeostasis | the process by which organisms keep their internal conditions relatively stable |
| element | a pure substance made of the same kinds of atoms |
| atom | smallest part of an element that can be identified as that element |
| molecule | the smallest part of a compound |
| compound | a combination of two or more elements |
| response | the reaction of a living thing to change |
| proton | atom particle having a positive charge (+) |
| neutron | atom particle having a neutral charge (0) |
| electron | atom particle having a negative charge (-) |
| nucleus | center of the atom composed of protons and neutrons |
| electron cloud | area around the nucleus where electrons are most likely found |
