What do venous walls look like compared to aortic walls? same 3 layers, only thinner because it's a low pressure system; can be compressed
What are the major tributaries to the IVC? common iliac veins, gonadal veins, & renal veins
How does the left renal vein course? anterior to the aorta & posterior to the SMA (between the 2)
How many hepatic veins are there & what is their sonographic sign? 3 veins (left, middle, & right) known as the "bunny" sign
How can you tell the difference between portal veins & hepatic veins on US? hepatic veins are anechoic (no bright walls) portal veins are echogenic (bright walls); appear oval or tear-drop shaped in transverse
The IVC is formed by: the confluence of the common iliac veins
The IVC courses superiorly through: the retroperitoneum, anterior & to the right of the spine, & to the right of the aorta
The right hepatic vein divides the liver into: anterior & posterior right segments
the left hepatic vein divides the liver into: medial & lateral left segments
the middle hepatic vein divides the liver into: left & right lobes
Which tributaries do NOT drain directly into the IVC? left gonadal & left suprarenal veins drain into the left renal vein
Normal IVC variants include: duplicate IVC, left positioned IVC, & the absence of the intrahepatic IVC
Normal variants of the hepatic vein include: accessory hepatic veins & absent right hepatic vein
The main job of the portal system: supplies blood to the liver from the stomach, spleen, & small & large intestines
the Portal Confluence is the joining of: the superior mesenteric vein & the splenic vein
Which vein drains into the splenic vein before the portal confluence? the inferior mesenteric vein
the portal vein & its tributaries are where in relation to the pancreas? portal vein- posterior to the pancreas neck & superior to the head splenic vein- posterior to the pancreas superior mesenteric vein- posterior to the pancreas neck
Portal Triad is made up of: portal vein, common bile duct, & hepatic artery (all echogenic)
