observation an act of recognizing and noting a fact or occurrence often involving measurement with instruments
inference a conclusion or opinion that is formed because of known facts or evidence
bias allowing personal opinions to influence your judgment
hypothesis idea or explanation that is tested through study and experimentation
scientific design organized set of procedures for an experiment
experiment scientific procedure used to test a hypothesis (cause and effect)
independent variable the factor that is changed by the scientist (the cause) ex: amount of sunlight
dependent variable the factor being tested and measured (the effect) ex: plant growth
