Inherited Traits

TermDefinition
Allele A form of a gene or a trait. A trait may have more than two alleles. For example eye color: blue
chromosome The direction/instructions for an organism's traits. Long strand of DNA. Most animals have 2 sets of chromosomes. Humans have 1 set of 23 chromosomes from mother and 1 set of 23 chromosomes from father.
DNA The substance that makes up chromosomes. Deoxyribonucleic Acid.
Dominant A gene
gene A material that offspring inherit. A section of DNA on a chromosome.
Inherited Traits A characteristic passed from parents to offspring through genes. (Characteristic-body Structure
offspring The young organism that results from sexual or asexual reproduction.
Organism A living thing.
Percentage A ratio that states the number of times an outcome is likely to occur out of a possible 100 times.
Probability The likelihood or chance that a specific outcome will occur out of a total number of outcomes.
Punnett Square A diagram used to predict the possible genotypes of offspring from two parents.
Ratio A comparison between two quantities
Recessive A gene
Variation A difference that happens within offspring.
