| producer | an organism that makes its own food |
| consumer | organism that obtains energy by feeding on other organisms |
| herbivore | consumer that eats only plants |
| carnivore | consumer that eats only animals |
| omnivore | consumer that eats plants and animals |
| scavenger | a carnivore that feeds on the bodies of dead organisms |
| decomposer | breaks down the wastes and dead organisms and returns the raw materials to the ecosystem |
| food chain | series of events in which one organism eats another and obtains energy |
| food web | consists of many overlapping food chains |
| energy pyramid | shows the amount of energy that moves from one feeding level to another in a food web |
| evaporation | process by which molecules of liquid water absorb energy and change to a gas |
| condensation | process by which a gas changes to a liquid |
| precipitation | rain, snow, sleet or hail |
| dispersal | movement of organisms from one place to another (wind, water or living things) |
| climate | typical weather pattern in an area over a long period of time |
| biome | group of land ecosystems with similar climates and organisms |
| continental drift | as the earth's plates move, the continents also move with them in this process |
