What is the name given to the slender muscle that attaches to the root of a hair? arrector pili
What is the function of the arrector pili? To make the hair "stand up" in response to cold or fright.
What pigment gives hair its color? melanin
What is another name given to sebaceous glands?q oil glands
Sebaceous gland openings tend to be where? Into hair follicles, this is how hair gets oil.
What is the name of the oil produced by sebaceous glands? sebum
How does a blackhead form? A sebaceous gland becomes clogged, and the sebum builds up beneath the epidermis.
How does a pimple form? Bacteria grows in the sebum that accumulates below a blackhead. Gross, huh?
What are the two types of sweat glands? eccrine (most common) and apocrine (less common)
What is the main function of the eccrine glands? Heat control, sweat is released so that it can evaporate- taking heat with it.
Where are apocrine glands most commonly found armpits, and pretty much anywhere that pubic hair grows.
What do ceruminous glands produce? Ear wax. Yeah, gross.
What is the main function of ear wax? To keep foreign bodies (dust, bugs etc...) from getting into the inner ear.
What are nails made of? Keratinized skin cells (deceased.)
