Genetics Vocabulary

TermDefinition
Gene Section of DNA that codes for a specific trait. They are carried from parents to offspring on chromosomes.
Allele Different forms of a gene, or a piece of genetic information inherited from each parent.
Dominant Allele One whose trait always shows up in the organism when the allele is present. Example: BB
Recessive Allele Is masked whenever the dominant allele is present. Example: bb
Geneotype The genetic makeup
Phenotype The physical appearance
Heterozygous/Hybrid A combination of a dominant allele and a recessive allele, the dominant coming first. Example: Bb
Homozygous/Purebred Has identical alleles on both sides. Example: BB
Codominant 50% chance of this trait.
