Science Unit 3 Vocab
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| 1. Heredity | The passing of physical characteristics from parents |
| 2. Trait | Each specific characteristics |
| 3. Genetics | The scientific study of heredity |
| 4. Fertilization | A new organism begins to form when egg and sperm cells join. |
| 5. Purebred | An organism that is the offspring of many generations that have the same form of a trait |
| 6. Gene | Used to describe the factors that control a trait |
| 7. Alleles | The different forms of a gene |
| 8. Dominant Allele | One whose trait always shows up in the organism when the allele is present |
| 9. Recessive Allele | On the other hand, is hidden whether the dominant allele is present |
| 10. Hybrid | A hybrid organism has two different alleles for a trait |
| 11. Probability | A number that describes how likely it is that an event will occur |
| 12. Punnett Square | A chart that shows all the possible ways alleles can combine in a genetic cross |
| 13. Phenotype | An organism's physical appearance, or visible traits |
| 14. Genotypes | An organism's genetic makeup, or alleles |
| 15. Homozygous | An organism that has two identical alleles for a trait |
| 16. Heterozygous | An organism that has two different alleles for a trait |
| 17. Incomplete Dominance | Occurs when one allele is only partially dominant |
| 18. Codominance | Occurs when both alleles for a gene are expressed equally |
| 19. Multiple Alleles | Some genes have this, which means that three or more possible alleles determine the trait |
| 20. Polygenic Inheritance | Occurs when more than one gene affects a trait |
| 21. Meiosis | The process by which the number of chromosomes is reduced by half as sex cells form |
