| decomposer | An organism that breaks down dead plants and animals for energy. |
| predator | An organism that hunts other animals. |
| prey | An organism that is hunted for energy. |
| herbivore | An organism that eats only plants. |
| carnivore | An organism that eats other animals. |
| omnivore | An organism that eats both plants and animals. |
| food chain | A simple diagram showing the flow of energy through organisms. |
| food web | A complex diagram showing the flow of energy through organisms. |
| energy pyramid | the model of energy flow in a community |
| autotroph | an organism that uses energy from the sun to make its own food |
| heterotroph | an organism that eats other organisms for energy |
