Grahonya Meiosis - I

Students will learn vocabulary related to meiosis

TermDefinition
Mitosis The process of dividing a cell's nucleus to make two identical nuclei
Meiosis A process that results in sex cells
Gamete A sex cell; sperm or egg
Egg The female gamete
Sperm The male gamete
Somatic Cell A cell that is not a sex cell
Diploid Having two copies or each kind of chromosome
Homologous chromosome One of a matching pair of chromosomes that comes from each parent
Haploid Having one copy of each kind of chromosome
Fertilization The joining of male and female gametes to create a new organism
Zygote A fertilized egg
Tetrad A pair of homologous chromosomes joined together
Crossing Over The process of homologous chromosomes in a tetrand trading pieces of similar DNA
