Mrs. Scott's Chap. 5

QuestionAnswer
Biosynthesis The process by which living organisms produce molecules
Catalyst A substance that alters the speed of a chemical reaction but does not get used up in the process
Chemical change A change that alters the makeup of the elements or molecules of a substance
Concentration A measurement of how much substance exists within a certain volume
Dehydration reaction A chemical reaction in which molecules combine by ejecting water
Diffusion The random motion of molecules from an area of high concentration to low concentration
Disaccharides Carbohydrates that are made up of two monosaccharides
Element All atoms that contains the same number of protons
Hydrophobic Lacking any affinity to water
Hydrogen bond A strong attraction between hydrogen atoms and certain other atoms (usually oxygen or nitrogen) in specific molecules
Hydrolysis Breaking down complex molecules by the chemical addition of water
Isomers Two different molecules that have the same chemical formula
Matter Anything that has mass and takes up space
Model An explanation or representation of something that cannot be seen
Molecules Chemicals that result from atoms linking together
Monosaccharides Simple carbohydrates that contains three to ten carbons atoms
Organic molecule A molecule that contains only carbon and any of the following: hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, sulfur, and/or phosphorous
Osmosis The tendency of a solvent to travel across a semipermeable membrane into areas of higher solute concentration
Peptide bond A bond that links amino acids together in a protein
Phase One of three forms- solid- liquid-gas- which every substance is capable of attaining
Physical change A change that affects the appearance but not the chemical makeup of a substance
Polysaccharides Carbohydrates that are made up of more than two monosaccharides
Saturated fat A lipid made form fatty acids which have no double bonds between atoms
Semipermeable membrane A membrane that allows some molecules to pass through but does not allow others molecules to pass through
Unsaturated fat A lipd made from fatty acids that have at least one doulble bond between carbon atoms

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
