Metabolism - Enzymes, Anabolic Reactions and Catabolic Reactions.

QuestionAnswer
What is metabolism? All reactions that take place in cells or organisms that sustain life.
Anabolic Reactions are where ......? Energy? Bonds? Small molecules are joined into larger ones. Energy is required. Bonds are being created.
Catabolic Reactions are where .....? Energy? Bonds? Large molecules are broken down into smaller molecules. Energy is released. Bonds are being broken.
Some of the .......... released from ............. ......... is used in ............. ............ Some of the energy released from Catabolic Reaction is used in Anabolic Reactions.
What type of reaction is Photosynthesis? Photosynthesis is an Anabolic Reaction
Why? It builds up larger molecules and uses energy (from the sun)
Why specifically? Because it requires energy to change the smaller molecules of ............. .............. and .......... into ........... and the larger molecule of ...........? It requires energy to change the smaller molecules of Carbon Dioxide and Water into Oxygen and the larger molecules of Glucose.
What type of reaction is Cellular Respiration? Cellular Respiration is a Catabolic Reaction?
Why? It breaks down larger molecules and releases energy.
Why specifically? It releases energy when it breaks down Oxygen and the larger molecule of Glucose into the smaller molecules Carbon Dioxide and Water.
Enzymes ......... reactions? Enzymes activate reactions.
A ............. .......... only occurs when there is a ........... amount of ......... to begin the .........? A chemical reaction only occurs when there is a sufficient amount of energy to begin the reaction.
Without .......... the ........... ......... requirement would be low Without enzymes, the activation energy requirement would be low.
Enzymes ......... the amount of ........... .............. to start the ................ that they ...........? Enzymes decrease the amount of energy required to start the reaction that they catalyze.
Enzymes ......... the .... of ....... that occur in ........... .................? Enzymes increase the rate of reaction that occur in living organisms.
What would happen without enzymes? (metabolism, life) Metabolism would be slow and there wouldn't be enough energy to sustain life.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
