Parts of Compound Microscope
Term | Definition |

eyepiece or ocular lens | lens nearest the eye and used to "look through" |
objective lenses | lenses located closest to specimen; commonly magnify at 4x, 10x, 40x |
stage | flat surface (platform) on which the slide is placed; stage clips hold the slide in place |
diaphragm | located under the stage; controls the amount of light passing through the specimen |
light source | might be a mirror or a light buld |
course adjustment | used to focus only under low power; never used when the high power objective is in place for viewing; usually the larger knob |
fine adjustment | the only focus you should use with high power; used to sharpen the image under lower power; usually the smaller knob |
