stage flat surface (platform) on which the slide is placed; stage clips hold the slide in place
diaphragm located under the stage; controls the amount of light passing through the specimen
light source might be a mirror or a light buld
course adjustment used to focus only under low power; never used when the high power objective is in place for viewing; usually the larger knob
fine adjustment the only focus you should use with high power; used to sharpen the image under lower power; usually the smaller knob
