| ecosystem | a community of organisms and their nonliving environment |
| biotic | the living aspect of an ecosystem |
| abiotic | soil, water, air, light , and temperature that define an ecosystem |
| Predator | an animal that hunts other animals for food |
| individual | a single organism of a species |
| population | numerous members of the same species that can reproduce |
| community | several different populations interacting in some way |
| herbivore | eats only plants |
| carnivore | meat eater |
| omnivore | eats both plants and animals |
| biosphere | the part of life where life exists |
| food chain | a linear diagram showing feeding reationships |
| food web | diagram that shows all the feeding relationships, made of several food chains |
| carrying capacity | the highest number of healthy organisms that an ecosystem can support |
| limiting factor | resources that controls a population's outgrowth |
