Geopraphy terms

geography terms like pleateu and basin and elevation

plateau A large, flat area that rises above the surrounding; at least one side has steep slope
basin An area that is lower than surrounding land areas; some basins are filled with water
isthmus A narrow strip of land that connects two larger areas of land
altitude/elevation height above sea level
source of a river The place where a river begins
mouth of a river The point where a river enters a lake or sea
tributary A river or stream that flows into a larger river
peninsula An area of land almost completely surrounded by water and connected to the mainland by an isthmus
mountain A landform that rises steeply at least 20,000 feet (1,610 meters) above surrounding level; usually wide at the bottom and rising to narrow peak or ridge
mountain range A line of mountains that are connected or very close together
vertical climate zone Climate zone in a region that changes according to elevation
gulf A large body of ocean or sea that is partially surrounded by land with a very small opening
sea A great body of salt water
longitude distance east or west of the Prime Meridian measured in degrees
equator Imaginary line that divides the Earth into northern and southern hemispheres
prime meridian Imaginary line that divides the earth into eastern and western hemispheres
tropic of cancer Imaginary line that is about 23.5 degrees north of the equator
tropic of capricorn Imaginary line that is about 23.5 degrees south of the equator
