Unit 1: Structure and Function of Cells

| Cell | The smallest functional unit of living things. |
| Cell Membrane | Structure that surrounds the cell and allows materials in and out of the cell. |
| Structure | How something is formed. How it looks or is shaped. |
| Function | What something does or the operation it performs. |
| Tissue | A group of similar cells working together to perform a specific function. |
| Organ | Structure that is composed of different kinds of tissue. |
| Organ System | A group of organs that work together to perform a major function. |
| Cytoplasm | The jelly-like substance found inside of the cell. |
| Nucleus | The control center of the cell. |
| Mitochondrian | Organelle that supplies energy to the cell. The "powerhouse" of the cell. |
| Vacuole | Storage area of the cell. The largest organelle in plant cells. |
| Ribosomes | Organelle that synthesizes proteins, Found scattered throughout the cytoplasm and on rough E.R. |
| Organism | A self-contained living things. |
| Organelle | Means "tiny organ". Structures found within cells that perform life functions for the cell. |
| Mitosis | The process of cell division. Process of a cell dividing into two identical cells. |
