These Flash Cards will cover a year 8 aspect of body systems
What is an Oesophagus? | It is a long muscular tube that has the mouth at one end and the stomach at its other end. The muscles of the oesophagus push the ball of food down the tube by contracting behind the ball. The muscles then relax. This process is called peristalsis. |
What is the Larynx? | The larynx is the short tube that connects the pharynx (throat) to the trachea (wind pipe). It runs at the front of the throat at the level of C3 to C6 vertebrae and lies anterior to the oesophagus (C3-6 = Cervical 3-6). |
What is the function of the Larynx? | • It allows air to be directed into the respiratory organs for gas exchange. • It is the organ that is responsible for producing vocal sounds (voice box). • It plays a role in preventing food and drink from entering the respiratory system. |
What is another name for the trachea? | Another name for the trachea is 'Windpipe'. |
What is the function of the trachea? | •Allows air to pass between the larynx and bronchi. It allows the air to be divided and routed into both lungs by ending in the two main bronchi. •The trachealis muscle that joins the two ends of the tracheal ring can contract, constricting the tracheal |
