Cell Structure

cell theory 1. All living cells are made of one or more cells. 2. Cells are the basic unit of life. 3. All cells arise from other cells.

prokaryote small, simple cells with NO nucleus
cell wall prokaryotes and PLANT cells only, provides structure and support
flagellum long, threadlike structures that enable movement of the cell
eukaryote complex cells with a nucleus and other organelles
nucleus internal compartment that houses the DNA
organelle a structure in the cell that carries out a specific activity
cilium short, hairlike structures that provide movement to cell
smooth ER produces lipids (fats) and breaks down toxic (poisonous) substances
rough ER has attached ribosomes, transports the proteins that are produced by the attached ribosomes
golgi apparatus packages and distributes the proteins
lysosome contains digestive enzymes (chemicals)
mitochondria produces energy for the cell (ATP)
chloroplast PLANT only, photosynthesis occurs
vacuole stores water, keeps plants rigid
