What is Biology? The study of living things (the science of life)
What are the 7 characteristics shared by living systems? Cellular Organism, Ordered Complexity, Sensitivity, Growth Development Reproduction, All organisms use energy, All organisms maintain homeostasis, and all organisms interact with other organisms and environment to evolve and adapt to their environment
What is the Cellular Organism characteristic? All organisms consist of one or more cells which carry out basic activities of life and is bound by membrane
What is the Ordered Complexity characteristic? All organisms are complex and highly ordered nonliving things can be complex but no ordered complexity
What is the Sensitivity characteristic? All organisms respond to stimuli
What is the Growth, Development, and Reproduction characteristic? All organisms are capable of growing and reproducing, and have hereditary molecules to identify species
How is the Biological World organized? The Biological World is hierarchical - each level builds on level below it
What is the Cellular Level comprised of? Atoms, Molecules, Macromolecules, Organelles, and Cells
How is the Cellular Level organized? Atoms are joined together in clusters (molecules), biological molecules make up organelles, organelles are bound by a membrane called cells
What is the basic unit of life? Cell
What is an example of a single cell? Bacteria
What is an example of a multi cellular organism? Animals and plants
What is the Organismal Level comprised of? Tissue, Organ, Organ System, Organism
Tissues Groups of similar cells that act as a functional unit
Organs Body structures composed of several different tissues that act as a structural and functional unit
How is the Organismal Level organized? Tissues make up organs, organs are grouped into organ systems, an organism is made up of organ systems
What is the Populational Level comprised of? Population, Species, Community, Ecosystem, and Biosphere
Population A group of organisms of the same species living in the same place

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
