Molecules & Movement
This reviews the vocab found in Unit 1 - Molecules & their Movement
Question | Answer |
---|---|
organic compounds | are CHains of repeating molecules that contain all three elements Carbon, Hydrogen and Oxygen. |
Protein | an organic compound made of a chain of amino acids. This type compound controls chemical reactions, fighting foreign invaders, sending messages, pigments, structure and more. |
Carbohydrate | an organic compound made of a chain of glucose/simple sugar molecules. It gives the cell quick energy. |
Lipid | an organic molecule that is made of a chain of fatty acid/glycerol molecules. It helps with stored energy, creates waxes and provides warmth/protection. |
Nucleic Acid | an organic compound made of nucleotides. This compound stores hereditary information (DNA/RNA) that is used to make proteins. |
Glucose | a simple sugar that chains together to form a carbohydrate and a more complex starch. An ingredient for our cells to make energy. |
Amino Acids | these chain together in a very specific order to create a protein. |
Nucleotide | these chain together to create a nucleic acid containing a code for the production of proteins |
Starch | a complex arrangement of glucose molecules |
Starch indicator | when placed in the presence of starch, this indicates that starch is present by changing colors to blue/black. |
Glucose indicator | when placed in the presence of glucose and heated, this indicates that glucose is present by changing colors to bright orange. |
Enzyme/Biological Catalyst | this is a type of protein that speeds up chemical reactions (digestion and synthesis). They are specific to one reaction. |
Transport | this is the movement of materials in and out of a cell membrane and throughout the organisms . |
Diffusion | this is the movement of molecules into and out of cells from an area of higher concentration to an area of lower concentration without using energy. |
Osmosis | diffusion of Water. |
Active Transport | the movement of molecules against diffusion from low concentration to high concentration. This TAKES ENERGY. |
