The Sensory System
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Sensory System: | energy from a stimulus which activates receptors to trigger a sensation or perception |
| Stimulus: | a form of energy that activates receptor endings of a sensory neuron. |
| The six major Sensory Receptors are: | Mechanoreceptors, thermoreceptors, nociceptors, chemoreceptors, osmoreceptors, and photoreceptors |
| Mechanoreceptors: | detect forms of mechanical energy such as changes in pressure, position, or acceleration |
| Thermoreceptors: | sensitive to changes in heat or cold |
| Nociceptors: | pain recepters |
| Chemoreceptors: | detect chemical energy of substances dissolved in the fluid around them |
| Osmoreceptors: | detect changes in water volume in some body fluid |
| Photoreceptors: | detect visible light |
| Somatic Sensory: | receptor signals reach the somatosensory cortex in which interneurons are organized like maps of individual body surfaces |
| Chemical senses: | taste and smell-begin at the chemoreceptors |
