Planning for Travel
Term | Definition |

travel | the movement of a person from one location to another location of some distance for any of several reasons |
biometric technoloby | identification that is readable by computers and uses unique measurable characteristics to identify people - DNA, blood samples, voice recognition, finger prints, eye scans, pictures, etc |
NEXUS | allows low-risk, pre-approved US and Canadian citizens to use a special ID card, uses 10 finger print and iris scan |
PASS card | uses two forms of smart ID for travel within western hemisphere - wallet sized passport with a microchip. has biometric info and radio frequency identification. all kept in a database. |
Enhanced Drivers license (EDL) | similar to PASS card contain microchip on drivers license - we have this in Georgia |
Examples of internet or web based Travel Planning tools | trip adviser, kayak, Travelocity, booking.com, airline websites, car rental agencies, and more |
travel agent | is an individual who works at a retail business that brings travelers and travel suppliers together |
travel planner | similar to a travel agent, but usually works in-house for a large corporation |
travel agency | are private businesses that promote travel sales to the public, they earn income based on sales (commissions) |
commission | a percentage of the sales price that is paid to the salesperson for each sale of a product (airline ticket, hotel room, etc.) |
business travel | done for the purpose of sales, training, and functions related to work |
leisure travel | also called pleasure travel is travel for rest, relaxation, and enjoyment |
transportation security administration | supervises security procedures before passengers board a plane |
visa | is a permission issued by a country to a non-citizen authorizing the holder to enter, exit, or live in a country for a specific time |
passport | a document issued by a national government as proof of a person's identity and citizenship |
embassy | is the official office of one country in another country |
department of homeland security | an agency designated to protect the United States from terrorist attacks and accidents and respond quickly to natural disasters |
U.S. Department of State | official source for information on travel requirements for U.S. citizens seeking to travel abroad or foreign tourists seeking to visit the United States - publishes travel advisories |
International certificate of vaccination (ICV) | also called a "yellow card" is proof of vaccinations and other medical tests |
travel insurance | insurance provided to travelers to protect them in case they need to change their trip or in case of emergency. Can include some medical insurance, help return some of the cost of the trip, etc. |
tourist card | provided to US citizens instead of a VISA, who wish to travel in Mexico or most other Latin American countries |
person trips | take place overnight and at least 50 miles (one way) away from home |
domestic travel | travel within one country |
international travel | travel between countries |
