Antibiotics

What do bacteriostatic antibiotics do? Do not kill, only inhibit growth
What do bactericidal antibiotics do? Kill the bacteria
What are broad spectrum antibiotics? Low specificity and affect a large range of bacteria
What are narrow spectrum antibiotics? High specificity, only affect a small range of bacteria
What do penicillin and cephalosporins contain? Beta lactam ring
What do penicillins and cephalosporins do? Inhibit an enzyme responsible for cell wall synthesis
What aminoglycisides do? Prevents methionine from binding to tRNA
What do tetracyclines do? Prevents tRNA from binding to an amino acid
What does chloramphenicol do? Prevents peptide bond formation in protein synthesis
What does rifamycin do? Inhibits RNA polymerase
What do sulphonamides and trimethoprim? Inhibits the enzyme which is the precursor for folic acid
what do quinolones do? Inhibit DNA girase, DNA does not coil
What anibiotics affect cell wall synthesis? Penicillin and cephalosporins
What antibiotics affect nucleic acid synthesis? Rifamycin, sulphonamides and trimethoprim, and quinolone
What antibiotics affect protein synthesis? Aminoglycisides, Chloramphenicol and tetracycline
