What are the 2 types of energy? Kinetic, Potential
What is kinetic energy? energy in motion
What is potential energy? stored energy
What is photosynthesis? the chemical reaction where green plants use water, light from the sun, and carbon dioxide to make glucose and oxygen.
What are food chains? A food chain uses pictures or words and arrows to show the movement of energy in an ecosystem
What is a trophic level? A trophic level indicates the position that the organism occupies in the food chain
What do arrows do in a food chain? point TO the animal that is doing the eating!
What is a aquatic food chain? a food chain that is water-related with sea plants and animals
What is a a terrestrial food chain? a food chain that is land related with plants and animals
What is a food web? a group of interconnecting food chains
What do food webs describe? the complex patterns of energy flow in an ecosystem
What is a energy pyramid? A pyramid that shows the amount of energy that moves from one trophic level to another in a food chain
The most energy is available at the _______ level of the pyramid producer
The availability of energy _________ as it moves up the energy pyramid decreases
What are the levels of consumers in a energy pyramid in order from bottom to top? Primary, Secondary, Tertiary, Quaternary
What is the 10% rule? Only about 10% of energy is passed to the next level of pyramid
What happens to the remaining 90% ? (Referring to the 10% rule) It is lost as heat in the enviroment
What is a joule? A measurement of energy, think of calories
What is a dichotomous key? A method for determining the identity of something by going through a series of choice. In the end, you arrive at the correct name of the item
What does dichotomous mean? Divided in to two parts
Biomagnification Process where a substance increases in concentration as it moves through the food chain
Toxin A chemical pollutant
