abiotic factor | an environmental factor that is not associated with the activities of living organisms |
tolerance curve | a graph of performance versus values of an environmental variable |
acclimation | organisms can adjust their tolerance to abiotic factors through this process |
conformer | an organism whose physiological reactions follow environmental changes |
regulator | organisms that use energy to control some of their internal conditions |
dormancy | a state of reduced activity during periods of unfavorable conditions, such as winter or drought |
migration | the strategy to move to a more favorable habitat |
niche | the specific role or way of life of an organism within its environment |
generalist | a species that has a broad niche ; they can tolerate a wide range of conditions and can use a variety of resources |
specialist | species that have narrow niches |
