Financial Terms

QuestionAnswer
What is interest? an amount paid to use someone’s money
What is saving? depositing your money into a financial institution for safekeeping and to earn interest.
What is inflation? driving up prices of food, gas, clothes, everything over time
What does TVM stand for? time value of money
What is the term for buying something with the expectation that it will make money for you. Investing
Another word for asset is? an item of value
Liability is? something owed to another person.
The degree to which an asset gains (or loses) value over a given period of time is called rate of return.
Income investments provide regular earnings, such as monthly interest, quarterly dividends, or, in the case of real estate, rent payments.
Growth investments are about delayed gratification. The goal is to buy an asset that you believe has the potential to increase in value over time.
What is bond? you lend money to a government or company. In return, the borrower promises to repay you in full on a specific date
The specific day at which they repay you is called? maturity date.
When you want help in making investing decisions, you can seek advice from an? investment advisor
You buy stocks and bonds through a registered broker.
Stock is? piece of the possible profit
Owning stock makes you a shareholder (aka stockholder).
Dividend? an amount paid in cash or shares of stock, based on the amount of stock shares owned.
NYSE stands for? New York Stock Exchange
NASDAQ stands for? National Association of Securities Dealers Automated Quotation System
Your offer to purchase is called a? Bid
A 401(k) plan is? known as an employer-sponsored plan, but you own your account.
What is a Certificate of Deposit (CD)? Savings certificate issued by a bank or credit union
What is a Savings Account? A deposit account that earns interest and is issued by a bank or credit union
What is a Money Market Account? A type of checking and savings account issued by a bank or credit union to hold your money
What is a Retirement Account? An account such as an IRA and 401(k) that helps you set aside money for retirement
