Photosynthesis Rxns

For 330 Photosynthetic reactions from Chapin et al 2011

Carbohydrates Any of a group of organic compounds that includes sugars, starches and celluloses that are produced by photosynthetic plants and contain only carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen in the ratio 1:2:1.
Carbon fixation reaction Those reactions in photosynthesis that use the products of the light-harvesting reactions to reduce CO2 to sugars; also termed light-independent reactions or dark reactions.
Carboxylase Enzyme that catalyzes the reaction of a substrate with CO2.
Chlorophyll Green pigment involved in light capture by photosynthesis.
Chloroplast Organelles that carry out photosynthesis.
Gross primary production Net carbon input to ecosystems, i.e., net photosynthesis expressed at the ecosystem scale (g C m–2 yr–1).
Irradiance Radiant energy flux density received at a surface, i.e., the quantity of radiant energy received at a surface per unit time.
Light-harvesting reaction Reactions of photosynthesis that transform light energy into chemical energy; also termed light-dependent reactions, or light reactions.
Mesophyll cells Photosynthetic cells in a leaf.
Net photosynthesis Net rate of carbon gain measured at the leaf level.
Oxygenase Enzyme that catalyzes a reaction with oxygen.
Photorespiration Production of CO2 due to the oxygenation reaction catalyzed by Rubisco; a process that recovers most products of the oxygenase activity of Rubisco.
Photosynthesis Biochemical process that uses light energy to convert CO2 to sugars; synonymous at the ecosystem scale with gross primary production.
Rubisco Ribulose bisphosphate carboxylase; photosynthetic enzyme that catalyzes the initial carboxylation in C3 photosynthesis.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
