Classification vocabulary

| binomial nomenclature | two word naming system (genus, species) |
| genus | group of closely related species |
| taxon | a group or level of organization in taxonomy |
| taxonomy Categories | kingdom, phylum, class, order, family, genus, species |
| evolutionary classification | strategy of grouping organisms together based on their evolutionary history |
| derived characters | characteristics that appear in recent lineage but not old |
| molecular clock | uses DNA comparisons to estimate the length of time that two species have been evolving independently. relies on a repeating process -mutation |
| cladistic analysis | identifiies and considers only those characteristics of organisms that are new chracteristics that arise as lineage evolves over time |
| cladogram | a diagram that shows the evolutionary relationship among a group of organisms. a type of evolutionary tree |
