Succession
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Primary succession | establishment and development of an ecosystem in an area that was previously uninhabited |
| Secondary succession | reestablishment of a damaged ecosystem in an area where the soil was left intact |
| Diversity (population/species) | the variety of organisms in a given area, the genetic variation within a population, the variety of species in a community, or the variety of communities in an ecosystem |
| Ecosystem | a community of organisms and their abiotic environment |
| Community | a group of various species that live in the same habitat and interact with each other |
| Species | a group of organisms that are closely related and can mate to produce fertile offspring; also the level of classification below genus and above subspecies |
| Climax community | the final stage of succession, in which populations of plants or animals remain stable and exist in balance with each other and their environment |
| Pioneer species | a species that colonizes an uninhabited area and that starts an ecological cycle in which many other species become established |
