| verandah | a covered platform along the outside of the house level with ground floor |
| draft a contract | write a legal document, eg, to buy or sell a house |
| estate agent | someone whose job is to help people buy, sell or rent a house or flat |
| inspect a property | check that a house or flat is in suitable condition |
| pay a deposit | make a first payment when you agree to buy something expensive |
| take out a mortgage | accept a legal agreement in which you will borrow money from a bank in order to buy a house or flat |
| landlady | a female person who owns a house or flat that other people can rent |
