Simplified cell parts and functions

| Cell | The smallest part of a living organism |
| Microscope | A tool used for viewing very small objects like cells. |
| Robert Hooke | The scientist who discovered cells |
| Cell membrane | The boundary around all cells that lets materials in and out. |
| Nucleus | The command center of the cell; it contains DNA |
| Mitochondria | The part that breaks down food to release energy for the cell |
| Ribosome | The part that makes proteins for the cell |
| Cytoplasm | The jelly-like substance inside the cell |
| Endoplasmic reticulum | The part that moves proteins around inside the cell |
| Golgi bodies | The part that packages and delivers proteins |
| Organelle | Small parts inside a cell that make the cell work |
| Cell wall | The tough, rigid outer part of a plant cell |
| Chloroplasts | The organelle in plant cells that does photosynthesis |
| Lysosome | An organelle in animal cells that contains digestive enzymes (chemicals) |
| Vacuole | A storage sac for water and other materials inside a cell |
| Centrioles | Small parts in animal cells that play a role in cell division |
| Cytoskeleton | A framework inside the cell that provides support and structure |
