| Simile | Comparison using like or as |
| Metaphor | A direct comparison of two unlike things |
| Alliteration | Repetition of consonant sounds, usually at the beginning of words |
| Parallelism | Repeating sentence or paragraph structure for emphasis |
| Rhetorical Question | A question that does not need to be answered but is intended to get the reader to think. |
| Allusion | A reference to something well-known |
| Onomatopoeia | When a word's sound imitates its meaning |
| Hyperbole | An extreme exaggeration |
| Imagery | Writing that uses the five senses |
| Symbol | An object that stands for itself and a deeper meaning as well |
| Personification | Giving a non-living thing human characteristics |
