Simile Comparison using like or as
Metaphor A direct comparison of two unlike things
Alliteration Repetition of consonant sounds, usually at the beginning of words
Parallelism Repeating sentence or paragraph structure for emphasis
Rhetorical Question A question that does not need to be answered but is intended to get the reader to think.
Allusion A reference to something well-known
Onomatopoeia When a word's sound imitates its meaning
Hyperbole An extreme exaggeration
Imagery Writing that uses the five senses
Symbol An object that stands for itself and a deeper meaning as well
