| Term | Definition |

| haploid | a cell containing only one member (n) of each chromosome pair characteristic of a species |
| diploid | a cell containing both members of every chromosome pair characteristic of a species (2n) |
| somatic cell | any body cell; is a diploid |
| gamete | a sex cell, either an egg cell or sperm formed by meiosis, having half the number of chromosomes as body cells |
| zygote | a diploid cell resulting from the fusion of two haploid gametes; a fertilized ovum (egg) |
| homologous chromosomes | 2 chromosomes, 1 from each parent, that contain the same genes, but alleles may vary |
| sister chromatids | two chromatids that are connected and have same information |
