Bacteria A member of a large group of unicellular microorganisms that have cell walls but lack organelles and an organized nucleus, including some that can cause disease.
Cell The smallest structural and functional unit of an organism.
Bacteriophage A virus that parasitizes a bacterium by infecting it and reproducing inside it.
Chloroplast A plastid that contains chlorophyll and in which photosynthesis takes place.

Nucleus A dense organelle present in most eukaryotic cells, typically a single rounded structure bounded by a double membrane, containing the genetic material.
DNA The fundamental and distinctive characteristics or qualities of someone or something.
Plasmid A genetic structure in a cell that can replicate independently of the chromosomes, typically a small circular DNA strand in the cytoplasm of a bacterium.
Cell Wall A rigid layer of polysaccharides lying outside the plasma membrane of the cells of plants, fungi, and bacteria.
Capsule A very large structure of some prokaryotic cells, such as bacterial cells.
