| Term | Definition |

| Species | Organisms that share most of the same traits (DNA) and can reproduce fertile offspring. |
| Evolution | A change in a species over time. |
| Variation | Differences within a species. |
| Survival of the Fittest | Organisms best suited to the environment are more likely to survive. |
| Fossil | Any remains or trace of past life. |
| Sedimentary Rock | Rocks where fossils are often found. |
| Extinct | When all members of a species have died. |
| Endangered Species | Very FEW organisms of a species are left. At risk of becoming extinct. |
| Mutation | Permanent change in DNA |
| Environment | An organism's surroundings |
| Adaptation | Anything that helps an organism survive in its environment |
| Camouflage | Coloring that helps an organism blend into its environment |
| Competition | When two or more organisms struggle for food, space and mates |
| Resource | What an organism needs to survive. Ex: food, water, shelter |
| Overpopulation | Too many of one species |
