cells

organelles and their functions

QuestionAnswer
nucleus( brain) control center, contains DNA, ribosomes are made here
ribosome (ribs-meat-protein) protein factories, made up of RNA and nucleic acid, found in the cytoplasm and rough ER
ER(endoplasmic reticulum) proteins are modified here, lipids are assembled on the smooth ER,
golgi apparatus(gold packages) modify, sort and package proteins
lysosomes (lysol cleans up germs) animal cell only contain enzymes that digest or break down materials, fights against foreign invaders like bacteria and viruses
mitochondria (mighty-strong-energy) powerhouse where we get our energy, during cell respiration they convert chemical energy into food for the cell
vacuoles storage structures, stores water, salt, proteins, carbohydrates, plants use them for structure and support
chloroplasts- plant cell only site of photosynthesis, during photosynthesis they convert sunlight into chemical energy
cytoskeleton network of protein fibers that maintain cell structure
cell membrane regulates what enters and leaves the cell, made up of lipids
cell wall- plant cell only provides structure, cellulose
cytoplasm jell-like substance that holds all the organelles in place
