Cell Organelles

Plant and animal cell organelles

TermDefinition
lysosome The digestion machine. Can break down foreign material. Can even destroy a cell (ANIMAL)
Centrosome During cell division (mitosis) this organelle divides and two parts move to opposite sides (ANIMAL AND PLANT)
Golgi body Packages proteins and carbohydrates for export from the cell. Shaped like 5 - 8 pancakes (ANIMAL AND PLANT)
Vacuole (ANIMAL) Several small bubbles that store fluid and fuid
Vacuole (PLANT) Surrounded by a membrane and filled with fluid. Takes up most of a plant cell
Flagella Small tail that helps o move a certain type of cell (ANIMAL)
Ribosomes Produces proteins. Builds muscle, hair, and tissue (ANIMAL AND PLANT)
Photosynthesis Process in which plants make their own food (PLANT)
Nucleus The "brain" of the cell that controls eating, movement, and reproduction (ANIMAL AND PLANT)
Rough ER Covered in ribosomes and helps transport materials through cell (ANIMAL AND PLANT)
Smooth ER Tubes that transport materials through the cell (no ribosomes) (ANIMAL AND PLANT)
Cell wall Thick and rigid layer of protein that gives plant support and structure (PLANT)
Mitochondrion "Powerhouse" of the cell. Breaks down food and releases energy (ANIMAL AND PLANT)
Chloroplasts The site of photosynthesis, contains chlorophyll that makes plants green (PLANT)
Amyloplast Found only in some plants. Stores starch (PLANT)
Cell membrane Protects the cell. Semipermeable and works like a screen. Lets in good nutrients and keeps out bad (ANIMAL AND PLANT)
Nuclear membrane Surrounds and protects the nucleus (ANIMAL AND PLANT)
Cytoplasm Jelly-like fluid that fills a cell. Clear and viscous (ANIMAL AND PLANT)
Nucleolus Is located in the nucleus and stores DNA templates (ANIMAL AND PLANT)

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
