QuestionAnswer
Autosome Any chromosome that is not a sex chromosomes.
Carrier An individual heterozygous for a specific trait.
Codominant Allele Pattern where phenotypes of both homozygous parents are produced in heterozygous offspring so that both alleles are equally expressed
Incomplete Dominance Neither allele is dominant, produces intermediate phenotype, blending of colors.
Karyotype A chart of chromosomes pairs arranged according to length and location. In humans there are 23 pairs.
Multiple Allele Presence of more than two alleles for a genetic trait.
Pedigree Graphic representation of genetic inheritance used by geneticists to map genetic traits.
Sex Chromosomes A chromosome involved with determining the sex of an organism, typically one of two kinds: XX or XY
Human Genome Project An international project to study the entire genetic material of a human being.
Test Cross Mating of individual of unknown genotypes with an individual of known genotype. Helps determine unknown genotype.
Nondisjunction Failure of homologous chromosomes to separate properly durning meiosis; results in gametes with too many or too few chromosomes.
Mutation A change or random error in a DNA sequence.
Gene Therapy The transplantation of normal genes into cells in place of missing or defective ones in order to correct genetic disorders.
Gel Electrophoresis Technique used for the separation of deoxyribonucleic acid, ribonucleic acid, or protein molecules using an electric devise.
Clone Genetically identical copies of an organism or gene
DNA Fingerprinting The analysis o f DNA from samples of body tissues or fluids in order to identify individuals
